a surprise

Yesterday, beneath Spring's beautiful cherry blossom, Brendan proposed!

Up until now I've always straddled the fence on marriage (Brendan too), but I have totally surprised myself by how I feel now that I am engaged. It feels so good! We both say we feel more united.

I think I now finally realise what people were talking about when they would say it's the ultimate commitment. (And I thought kids were...)

My parents were thrilled, and my Aunt who has been asking me on and off over the years 'do I need to buy a hat?' said, poetically, 'thank Christ for that!'. Okay, we're slow, we get it. We think it's just the right time though.

We have six to seven months to plan for the day and, given my past (lack of) interest in weddings and marriage, I really have no idea where to start. Does anyone know of any great resources (magazines, websites, blogs, anything...).

  3. Congratulations!! Wonderful news. LOVE the ring!!
We were the same, married after kids and it really is amazing. Have no idea about wedding info. We 'got married' not 'had a wedding'. Married at out local art gallery, so no need for decorations ;) Had nibbles, drinks and photos there. Fuss free and amazing. People still say it was one of the best they have been too, even Nana! Good luck! Look forward to seeing how the planing goes xox

  4. congratulations!!! i agree, marriage really is a huge commitment. although nowadays with the baby, i feel like we're roommates taking shifts caring for him. sigh. we need to make more of an effort to do things for just us, too!

there are some great links on this blog: http://tenthousandonly.blogspot.com/

I struggled to find anything bridal that didn't induce bile. Indie bride was slightly more bearable in the way of ideas. Congratulations, it really is a wonderful commitment. And the ring is breathtaking. We married in January this year, and although Tom proposed much earlier, I ended up being seven months pregnant, and making my own wedding dress with a blossoming tummy in mind.
I found that whilst formality was a good idea in the service, we had a low key weekend event overall, and people had a fantastic time in the more relaxed environment. All the best, and take anyone up on the offer of help, as it really is a fairly daunting task.

  6. oh wow, Catherine. congratulations! that is wonderful news. and such a beautiful ring!

I am also in two minds about marriage. I think if it feels right then it must be right.

I am just starting to plan a friend's wedding with her and she bought Martha Stewart's wedding magazine for inspiration. She is the least 'Martha Stewart' person I know but the magazine is really good for ideas.

I like the Etsy Handmade Wedding Series too.

If you are getting married in 6-7 months, you might want to make finding and booking a venue your priority! In my experience, that is the hardest thing to get, especially with such short notice.

    Happy planning!

  10. Thankyou all for the well-wishes and links, so helpful (albeit a bit overwhelming)!

As it turns out he had already researched venues and tentatively booked a lovely church. It seems he had thought about alot beforehand, what a man!

And he had the ring (white gold/diamond) made specially. He knows more about the four C's than I will ever do. And I am told I need to look. after. it.

  17. Congratulations! Exciting times. I would recommend Martha Stewart Wedding magazine and online: http://www.marthastewartweddings.com/ I found it good for inspiration as it covers everything from the bigger-than-big OTT weddings down to the DIY low-budget creative ones.

  19. Congratulations Catherine!

I always thought you were already married, you and Brendan just look so comfortable and happy together with your 2 little girls. :)

I got married almost 6 years ago, I'd just say to enjoy it, don't get stressed, at the end of the day, it's not all about the cake and dress and what not, but about celebrating the rest of your lives together.

I can't wait to see the photos! I bet your wedding will be absolutely beautiful. :)

  27. Wow, how exciting! Congratulations. I'm very impressed with Brendan's planning - totally opposite to my hubbie.

I bought a few mags before ours and did get a dress loosely copied from a picture in one, but as far as all the other stuff the mags say you need - well we didn't. Ours was very casual on the beach, with reception just up the hill and our accommodation next to the restaurant. The best thing was I swam in the ocean the morning of the wedding. So relaxed! I could go on and on and tell you every detail. I love to talk about it!

  28. Congratulations! That ring is gorgeous. I wish I could help with wedding info but mine was a very low-key wedding. I couldn't stand the thought, or the expense, of a huge 'event'.
The girls will love being a part of the wedding - how special for them.

  38. I just wanted to wish you congratulations! That is wonderful and exciting.

We had shoestring budget for our wedding 3 years ago, so I'm not too much use for advice. I did find that magazine browsing was a great place to start in determining what you really want.
All the best with the planning.

  39. Congratulations - gorgeous ring and the shorter dresses would look wonderful on you. I wasn't a wedding person either in terms of the planning, but I found it easy to get wrapped up in it, however simple the end event ends up being. I did come across a sweet wedding type blog a few weeks ago, I'll see if I can find it again.
