I've had numerous scans throughout this pregnancy due to suspected placenta previa (it's low lying). The second to last scan was a month ago and I remember listening to the lady reading out the baby's measurements and thinking 'what??'. The head is how small? Apparently the head circumference falls in the bottom 2 percentile (meaning pretty much no other baby has a head as small (my interpretation, not the Doc's). And to make it sound even more comical, the abdomen was in the 75th percentile (meaning only 25% of babies have a larger abdomen). So here I am picturing this baby with a pint sized head and a rotund belly. Will it look like me in my pregnant state, I wondered? Is it because I have not religiously worn only maternity pants, sometimes opting for my pre-pregnancy jeans (somewhat uncomfortable), and that I have stunted the head growth? Kind of like how a plant doesn't grow any bigger than the pot it is in? My man thinks I am bonkers as he listens to my drivel. He's probably right, though I just blame it on pregnancy hormones not to mention natural curiosity. And another scan today (the last, thank goodness) confirmed her head is still in the bottom percentile.
To add substance to my wild thoughts, my mother kindly told me she had a dream not too long ago about the baby being born with a golf-ball sized head! Thanks Mum.
After pushing out a head that was in the 75th percentile, I'm thinking you should look at this as a good thing. The word dozen and dozens of stitches comes to mind (TMI?). I'm sure Lucy #2 will be just right!
ReplyDeletei haven't had any ultrasounds since the 20 week one, but it would be pretty interesting to know how he's measuring (even if they're slightly wrong).
ReplyDeletea friend of mind is convinced that her tear came from the baby's nose. mine certainly doesn't look like he has my button nose. hmm.
i am trying my best not to think about these things, i would drive myself nuts! yesterday he was swimming all over the place instead of sticking to his usual spot, so maybe the tree-pot (or goldfish-aquarium tank) only works if the baby stays head down for most of the time? being hormonal and crazy, i would totally buy your theory.
I dont like all the percentile stats - they just freak you out... and don't go well with hormones! Lucy's little sister will be perfect... and a small head is good, apart from the obvious imminent reason, at least she can wear hats! I have a big head and can't get one size hats to fit me! p.s. Small Child and I have decided you get an award!
ReplyDeletehaha... you are hilarious! i side with yummy mummy. pushing out a petite little head is just perfect!
ReplyDeleteand the dress arrived yesterday and it even more lovely in person!!! it fits both true and brave so perfectly that i am glad they both to share it!!! thank you thank you!!!
oh i know you said you wouldn't get a double... but this really is not bad.

Yes, I am quite chuffed at her head size after getting over the idea she might have a pinhead!
ReplyDeleteRubyellen - I think I am going to try a kiddi-board, those little attachments that attach to the back, before considering forking out for another buggy. I'm so pleased you like the dress and it fits both girls. Yay!
Hi Shael, I am due 12 Feb. You?
My friend's little boy has a head that is off the charts on the large side, but you'd never know by looking at him...hats are slightly snug but he's absolutely healthy. I think the actual variation between kids' heads must be slight because they all look pretty much the same...she'll be a beauty. I had a dream with my last pregnancy that he came out with an adult's head/face, that freaked me out :)
ReplyDeleteHi - I also had the enlarged abdomen on my late pregnancy scan - I had to have one because I was enormous - bubby was due to be an 11 pounder but, thank goodness, decided to make an appearance 3 weeks early at a much more civilised 9lb 11oz. Anyway, 20 months on she still has an enlarged abdomen and we have just found out that its because she is gluten intolerant, possibly coeliac. Maybe something to keep in mind when bubs starts eating solids. Melinda
